Sara Maria Rilling was born into a musical family in Stuttgart. Her musical education began on the piano and continued on the viola with Friedrich Rüstig and Enrique Santiago at the University in Stuttgart.

She studied in Salzburg at the Mozarteum with Jürgen Geise and later in Berlin with Erich Krüger and Stefan Fehlandt and completed her diploma in Weimar studying under Erich Krüger.

Additional musical impulses came through masterclasses with Hariolf Schlichtig, Jürgen Kussmaul, Paul Coletti and Thomas Kakuska.

Sara is a member of the Bach-Collegium Stuttgart, plays regularly in the Oregon Bach Festival, played with Israel philharmonic and the Deutsche Sinfonieorchester Berlin.

Sara is a passionate chamber musician and performed with Shai Wosner, Jeffrey Kahane, Jörg Widmann, Amihai Grosz and Isabel Charisius among others.
As a soloist she played with the Orchestra Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, the Südwestdeutsche Philharmonie Konstanz, the Oregon Bach Festival Orchestra, the Haydn Orchestra Bozen, the Philharmonic Orchestra Medellin (Kolombia), the TCU Symphony Orchestra (Texas), the Orquesta Sinfonica de Merida (Venezuela) and the Simon Bolivar Orchestra in Caracas.

Sara is a musical embassador. Since more then 10 years she works with much success giving lessons to children from the slums in Venezuela and giving them another perspektive of life through music. She gave masterclasses for Viola in Chile, Venezuela, Colombia and Africa and teaches in Germany.

She founded the international chamber music academy Hohenstaufen, with students from the whole world, which takes place every year in Hohenstaufen near Stuttgart. She lives as an freelancing artist in Berlin.
